Midcoast

Midcoast Maine runs roughly from the Kennebec east to Penobscot Bay, and it is where Maine boating stops being convenient and starts being worth it. Deep rivers, hundreds of islands, working harbours that are still working, and the densest concentration of boatyards and boatbuilders in the state.

Practically, it splits into the river harbours — Boothbay, the Sheepscot, the Sasanoa, the Damariscotta — and the open water of Penobscot Bay beyond. The rivers are protected and tidal and want the current thought about; the bay is deep, cold and foggy and wants the chart thought about.
