Moosehead Lake
Moosehead is the largest lake in Maine and the most remote water in this directory — forty miles of it, mountains on every side, Mount Kineo standing up out of the middle, and long stretches of shoreline with nothing on them at all.
Greenville at the south end and Rockwood on the western shore are the two access points, and between them they hold effectively all of the lake's fuel, service and slips. There is nothing in between, which is the point of the place and also the thing to plan around.
The season is short — the lake is high and cold, and the useful window is roughly June through September. Weather builds fast over that much open water; local practice is to watch the sky rather than the forecast.
