Downeast

Downeast is everything east of Penobscot Bay — Mount Desert Island, the Schoodic shore, and the long run toward the Canadian border. Tides get bigger, fog gets more persistent, harbours get further apart, and the number of places that can haul or fix a boat drops sharply.

Most cruising traffic stops at Mount Desert, and the marinas in this directory reflect that: Southwest Harbor, Somes Sound and the Stonington area hold the service capacity. East of there, plan fuel and shelter properly in advance.
